NEW YORK WOMEN IN COMMUNICATIONS STUDENT CAREER BOOTCAMP: YOUR ROADMAP FOR A TRANSFORMING INDUSTRY

Each year, the New York Women in Communications hosts an event for students, featuring communications professionals speaking on a range different topics. More than 200 students attend to get career tips on various aspects in the communication fields, ranging from entrepreneurship to marketing to scholarships and financial wellness.

Attendees will be required to choose one panel from Session A and one panel from Session B. All attendees will participate in the Final Panel.

Session A: 5:15-6 p.m.

Panel 1: The Digital-First Journalism of Newspapers, Magazines and Web Content
While journalism schools may still teach the basics of newspaper reporting and magazine editing, the industry has made an enormous shift from the printing press to the CMS. Hear panelists discuss what it’s like to work in digital-first journalism, how they got their first jobs out of college, what skills are necessary to thrive and where the industry is headed next.

Panel 2: TV, Audio, & Film in the Streaming Age
Podcasts, movies, even entire television series — it’s all on demand at our fingertips. But what was it like before Netflix, Hulu and Spotify, and where is the industry going? Here, our panelists will share their experiences breaking into the television, radio, and film industries, and discuss how to make connections, the types of jobs available for recent grads, and more.

Panel 3: A Day in the Life: PR, Marketing and Corporate Communications
What’s a typical day like for publicists, marketing pros and corporate communications execs? From writing a press release that gets an editor to open the email to creative campaigns that span multiple channels, hear panelists discuss the challenges of this changing industry, the key to keeping clients happy and what could be expected of execs in the coming years.

Session B: 6-6:45 p.m.

Panel 1: Landing Your First Job: Tips from the Other Side of the Table
Landing your first job after school is no small feat, but a little preparation (and confidence!) goes a long way. Our speakers will reveal what really makes a candidate stand out, how to nail even the trickiest interview questions, and the skills that recent grads need to have to get a foot in the door and impress the hiring manager.

Panel 2: How to Use Social Media to Find Success in Your Career
From job postings on LinkedIn and Facebook to making the right connections on Twitter and finding inspiration and motivation on Instagram, social media can be an asset to your career if you know how to use it the right way. Hear our panelists discuss the do’s and don’ts of creating professional profiles, ways to maximize your online network, tips for managing every channel and more so that you can start scrolling your way to success.

Panel 3: Build Relationships Like a Pro: A Guide to Networking
From the students you sit next to in class to the internship coordinator at the office, everyone around you is an integral part of your network. Our speakers will offer tips and tricks for growing those relationships, building new ones, finding a mentor and securing a squad that’ll support you in your career for years to come.

Final Panel: 7-7:45 p.m.

A Guide to Being a Boss: The Leaders of NYWICI
