Career Advancement Tip #49*

Start with Your Family and Friends

You want to start this lifelong networking quest by connecting with anyone and everyone with whom you have something in common. These are the people most likely to help you in your life and career. Human beings are tribal by nature and people take care of their own.

Begin with your family and friends. Do not assume they know what you’ve been doing recently or have any idea what you want to do (or who you might want to meet to get you there). You never know who might know someone in your field until you ask them. This includes the family members who only see you at weddings. Often, these people will tell you, “if there’s anything you need, let me know.” Well, now you need something! No it’s not a job — not yet, anyway. What you need from those who love you are introductions to people who may be able to help advance your career.
